Obesity Causes Inflammation

Over the years, I have read many articles that discuss the concept of excess body fat causing an inflammation response in the body that can be deadly. Studies have shown that excess weight in the mid-section seems to be the most dangerous.

Inflammation can be responsible for the following conditions: thrombosis, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, arthritis, and insulin resistance.

Scientists now are looking at fat as an organ.  They found that the fat cells “adipocytes” have several jobs.  Adipocytes release vital energy-producing fatty acids and also store the fatty acids for later use.  It is also responsible for releasing hormones that help to regulate body weight.  Scientists have learned that for the overweight and the obese they are also releasing inflammatory chemicals.

By controlling the amount of fat storage in your body you will improve and prevent many diseases.  Eating less and having healthy food choices along with exercise on a regular basis are still the best ways to treat obesity and prevent disease.

What causes inflammation in our bodies…

    2. Food allergens—mostly delayed reactions to food or hidden allergens that lead to “brain allergies” (allergic reactions in the body that cause inflammation in the brain—more about these in a moment)

    4. Toxins such as mercury and pesticides (and the 85,000 mostly untested toxins in our environment), which have been linked to immune dysfunction and autoimmune diseases

    5. Low-grade, hidden, or chronic infections such as HIV-associated dementia, syphilis, and Lyme disease, which can cause many neurologic and psychiatric “diseases”

    6. Stress—emotional or physical, such as trauma

    7. Sedentary lifestyle

    8. Inadequate sleep—less than 7 hours a night

    9. Nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin D, zinc, and omega-3 fats

Prevent Cardiovascular Disease

An overview of some common cardiovascular health problems and insght into prevention…

Atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of death and disability in our society and one of them main health issues that people are facing today. Generally speaking, it is classified as heart or cardiovascular disease.

Atherosclerosis is a disease affecting arterial blood vessels. It is a chronic inflammatory response in the walls of arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood to your heart and other parts of your body. Atherosclerosis is a form of arteriosclerosis. Arteriosclerosis is a general term describing any HARDENING and LOSS OF ELASTISITY in the arteries.

Both are caused by a build up of “plaque” in the walls of the arteries.
This plaque comes from:  fat, cholesterol, calcium, inflamatory response to stress and injury, and other substances found in the blood. Sugar and high insulin levels also damage arteries by the inflammatory process.

Atherosclerosis causes two main problems:

#1 First, the  plaque can ruptures and potentially cause either a stoke, heart attack or just more narrowing. It can also impair blood supply which can lead to a stroke or heart attack.  

#2 Second, the lack of elasticity in the arteries can result in an ANEURYSM.

What causes this:
unknown factors, possibly hereditary conditions, lack  of physical activity, smoking, and unhealthy eating. Unhealthy eating is the root of all of the “lifestyle” diseases in our society.

The fact that 66% of us are overweight and 33% obese, means that there is a problem in what we are eating.

Now I do not what to place “blame” or “fault” on anyone. I just want you all to be aware so you can PREVENT this from happening to you or your loved ones!

PREVENTION:

maintain healthy weight
maintain normal blood pressure
maintain helathy cholesterol and triglyceride levels
reduce homocysteine levels and chronic inflamtion
maintain healty blood glucose and insulin levels (which result from overeating and eating processed and sugary foods)

HOW:

The above can be accomplished by eating a diet that is rich in vegetables and fruits, omega 3 fatty acids. Avoid saturated, fried foods, and trans fats – also called hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils of any type.  Avoid all processed and refined foods such as white breads, rice etc. Read the labels on the products!!

Increase intake of fiber and whole grains. Dietary protein should come primarily from fish and plant sources (soy, beans, legumes). Do I need to say ditch the soda and sweets??  

Lastly, get regular physical exercise and keep stress levels low!!
